Air filters
The Driver's Guide specifies how often the air filter should be replaced. Replacing a dirty or clogged air filter can save up to 10% on fuel.
Candles
As spark plugs age, they become pitted and the gap is often outside the original equipment specifications. Carbon buildup can foul the electrodes, and insulators can crack, resulting in inefficient combustion, poor performance, and increased fuel consumption.
O2 sensors
All vehicles built after 1980 are equipped with O2 sensors. The sensor is a key component of the fuel system and transmits data to the electronic control module. Its function is to reduce emissions and help the engine run optimally. Surprisingly, replacing a faulty O2 sensor can improve fuel economy by up to 40%.
EGR valves
EGR valves, a key component of the emission control system, can also affect fuel consumption. If the valve remains open, it causes a vacuum leak that results in rough idling and jerking. If the valve remains closed, it can increase combustion temperatures and cause knocking. Neither of these conditions contributes to fuel savings.
Fuel filters
Today's gasoline is very clean, but it still contains dirt and deposits that, over time, obstruct fuel flow. The result is inefficient combustion, poor efficiency, and increased fuel consumption.
Engine oil and oil filters
Clean engine oil reduces friction between metal parts and allows the engine to run more efficiently. Similarly, dirty or contaminated oil filters increase fuel consumption.
Tuning parts
Many drivers mistakenly believe that their vehicle is virtually maintenance-free. Even in today's highly advanced vehicles, a proper tune-up, including replacing many of the parts mentioned above, can deliver substantial fuel savings.

Tires that are underinflated by just two pounds per square inch (psi) can increase fuel consumption.
Cleaning the throttle body
Over time, dirt builds up on the throttle body, causing rough idling or other performance issues, not to mention increased fuel consumption. Looking inside the throttle body (A), you'll notice a ring of dirt (B) around the butterfly (C). This area of dirt extends to the back of the housing. The best way to clean it is to remove it from the engine and clean it on your workbench.
